A Bad Thing, A Bad Thing!

Recently, on the train, I was reminded again of our Great British culture of ignoring our fellow human-beings. We really are experts in the field. True trailblazers. It doesn’t matter what situation you stick the average English man in, he will show a brilliant aptitude for not even acknowledging your presence.

I know it’s not everyone who is like this, so don’t get all uppity (as I am English and I know loads of great English people), but I say this for good reason: I was on the train in London and I wasn’t sure where I was going–If I had gone too far or not far enough. So I asked the people nearby. “Good day,” I said, imitating someone out of a Charles Dickens novel for no apparent reason but I thought Well I’ve started now so I may as well continue this, “Would you mind telling me if we are at Oxford Avenue yet?”

They all looked at me as if to say Man that Cosmetic eyelid surgery went really wrong...Then they turned away and it seemed they were wondering if they’d actually seen anything at all.

Then the train stopped, the doors opened and the three of them got off. I shouted at them of course, thinking they hadn’t heard me. And what a state of affairs it was! One simple question was all I wanted, and even that was too much!

So, next time someone asks you a simple question, please be polite. You never know, you might need a favour when you’re somewhere and completely lost.
